I think I have hit a combination keys in error, the keys on my acer laptop are typing out the number or superscript item when I type normally, how do I turn this off.
Sounds like you turned on numlock, there is probably a Fn key or something similar that you need to press with the numlock key to turn it off. Looks like F12 + FN would turn it off from google image search, don't have an acer to look at though.
I have an Acer and you'll have to press Fn + the numlock key (numlock is written in blue letters).
Then your problem should go away.
The problem is easy to explain, most Acer laptops (and others) don't have a num-pad.
Instead they have a num-pad integrated in their keyboard.
J = 1; K = 2; L = 3; U = 4, etc.
It might have happend that you accedently turned it on.
